VERDICT IN R. v. KOLOLA

OTTAWA – March 11, 2010 – A jury in the Nunavut Court of Justice today found Pingoatuk Kolola, 39, guilty of first-degree murder in the shooting death of RCMP Constable Douglas Scott. The offence carries an automatic life sentence without eligibility for parole for 25 years.

Constable Scott, 20, was shot on November 5, 2007 while responding alone to a call about an impaired driver in Kimmirut, Nunavut. Alcohol is forbidden in this Baffin Island community.

Pingoatuk Kolola was arrested and charged on November 6, 2007. He has been in custody since then.

He has 60 days to decide whether or not he will appeal the verdict.
