VANCOUVER– June 8, 2010 – The Public Prosecution Service of Canada today announced that it is seeking to appeal the sentence in the recent case of Prapaharan Thambithurai.

The PPSC has filed a Notice of Appeal in the British Columbia Court of Appeal regarding the sentence of six months in prison, imposed on May 14, 2010.

The Notice states that “In the circumstances of this case, the sentence imposed was inappropriate and inadequate.

On May 11, 2010, Prapaharan Thambithurai, 46, pleaded guilty to a count of providing financial services knowing that they would benefit a terrorist group, namely the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE), contrary to ss. 83.03(b) of the Criminal Code. The offence carries a maximum penalty of 10 years in prison.

The decision to appeal is guided by policy outlined in the FPS Deskbook, which is a public document.
