MUNYANEZA FOUND GUILTY OF GENOCIDE, CRIMES AGAINST HUMANITY AND WAR CRIMES

MONTREAL – May 22, 2009 – Désiré Munyaneza was found guilty today in the Superior Court of Quebec of offences under the Crimes Against Humanity and War Crimes Act.

Although the Court rendered a guilty verdict, the case is not closed as the Court has yet to hand down a sentence. It would therefore be inappropriate to make any further comments.

This is the first-ever prosecution in Canada under the Crimes Against Humanity and War Crimes Act. Specifically, Mr. Munyaneza was convicted of killing Tutsi, causing serious bodily harm to Tutsi, raping Tutsi women and pillaging. The offences were committed in Butare, Rwanda, in 1994.

The Public Prosecution Service of Canada is responsible for providing prosecution-related legal advice to law enforcement agencies and for prosecuting offences under federal jurisdiction, including offences under Canada's War Crimes and Crimes Against Humanity Act.
